New accommodation centre for abused women to be created with UNFPA-Tunisia support

Friday, April 17, 2020

A centre offering accommodation for female victims of abuse will be set up by the Ministry of Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs. Technical and financial support will be extended by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Tunisia.

The centre includes ten quarantine spaces for abused women during a fourteen-day period as a preventive measure over the spread of the COVID-19. Women are afterwards accommodated at a centre for victims of violence, UNFPA Tunisia Friday said in a press release.

The centre was created as increased violence against women was reported since the start of the curfew and the lockdown in Tunisia. It is intended to help prevent coronavirus transmission and carry out the cooperation programme on gender equality.

UNFPA Tunisia reiterated its commitment to protect women and girls against abuse and ease their access to basic services.
